Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico

Easy installation

The Sandoval Reservoir is the main source of water for 48 miles of ditch and canals that supply the Acoma reservation and surrounding communities with much-needed water for crops. Much of the ditch is lined with concrete, which has broken apart over the years, and more than 65 percent of the water is lost through seepage from the system — draining the already scarce supply of water.

Governor Bill Richardson initiated the "Governor's Water Initiative Fund," for the State of New Mexico. The fund was established for the purpose of utilizing new technologies being developed to conserve the states valuable water resources. FastDitch Inc, was selected and awarded a contract to manufacture its patented trapezoidal lining system for a test bed project located at Acoma Pueblo.

Working closely with Governor Richardson's staff, Albert Gonzales, from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the project will be completed at the end of September, 2005. Preliminary monitoring completed by the BIA showed a loss of 63% of the water flowing through the 1.5 mile of concrete lined ditch. The SmartDitch solution is expected to drastically reduce the losses, which adds up to a savings of millions of gallons of water that is other wise lost annually.
